A Place Unmade is an environmental thriller following a group of students determined to stop the man who wants to manipulate the world grain market. The story features genuine characters and cuisine from the New Orleans culture, as well as an in depth look at the threat of environmental terrorism. Ms. Seyler’s writing will keep you engaged until the final pages as her characters fight to prevent a global disaster, and at the same time, educate you about the threats to our food supply chain.”

“Carla Seyer’s A Place Unmade is a dynamic environmental thriller focusing on the vulnerability of the US crop system. When wealthy Jack Stillman launches a devious plan to ruin the crop yield, it takes the combined efforts of farmers, scientists, and federal agents to figure out what exactly is happening and who is responsible. A Place Unmade is an intricately researched novel exposing how dependent we are on organized crop production, which could be compromised quite easily by the correct formula of timing, technology, and human greed.”

“Enlightening and Entertaining”
“I loved this fast-paced environmental thriller that raises ethical questions about our modern food supply. Even though we suspect and then learn early on who the villain is, Seyler keeps the suspense going throughout as we watch our heroes’ inch closer to the truth. The heroes are a group of grad students whose debates in a bioethics class deftly lay out the philosophical and moral implications of global agriculture, plus one highly ethical Scottish scientist. Overall I enjoyed the thriller/suspense plot, and I thoroughly enjoyed the ethical dilemmas raised by this novel, which are presented in a balanced, non-preachy way, and which made me stop and think about the complex factors affecting our food production.”

“In her debut novel, Carla Seyler offers up a unique and meticulously researched tale about an all too real possible disaster. Intertwining the foibles of family, especially when money and power compete with parenthood, Seyler gives us relatable characters on multiple levels. Mia is perhaps my favorite—we all need that wise and adoring grandmother right—but our heroine Valentina navigates an all too familiar path through today’s dating landscape that provides relief to the serious danger she finds herself in. A Place Unmade spans the Western Hemisphere, reminding us of our global interdependency and making one question the wisdom of industrial farming. Less is more – but Seyler gives us a taste of each with a serving of nice-guys-can-win-the-girl on the side. Fun read!”
